Metrorex unionists are threatening to launch a labor dispute and, ultimately, a general strike if the company’s management does not begin negotiations on the new collective labor agreement by November 1.
The Unit – Free Metro Union (USLM) is holding the fourth meeting of the Negotiation Commission, but company representatives say they still do not have a mandate to begin discussions. Union leader Marian Artimon told Observator that, in the absence of progress, employees will follow the procedures provided by law: launching a labor dispute, mediation, conciliation, a warning strike and a general strike.
The unionists are requesting an increase in income of approximately 450 lei net, citing provisions regarding the minimum wage, as well as improved working conditions underground. They complain about inadequate oxygen levels and ventilation, exclusively artificial lighting, humidity and dust concentrations that they say exceed the permitted limit by up to eight times. Negotiations are expected to continue before the deadline set by the union.
