The mayor of a commune in Mehedinți died of a heart attack while heading to work. He won his last term against his ex-wife and had also been investigated for embezzlement and fraud.

Jean Rogoveanu, the mayor of the Gogoșu commune in Mehedinți County, died on Thursday at the age of 59, following a heart attack suffered while traveling in a car, in which he was not driving. The mayor was on his way to work, and his partner was driving the vehicle. At the moment he felt unwell, she called for medical help, but despite resuscitation efforts, the doctors were unable to save him.

Rogoveanu had been mayor since 2012 and won the local elections in 2024, despite his ex-wife running for the same position. This year, he and other officials from the mayor's office were investigated for embezzlement and computer fraud, with estimated damages of nearly 500,000 lei.
