The mayor of Slatina claims that investigators found bags containing undecomposed bodies from the COVID period in the Strehareți cemetery

The mayor of Slatina, Mario De Mezzo, claims that, during investigations carried out on Monday, September 21, bags containing decomposed bodies from the COVID pandemic period were found in Strehareți Cemetery. The statements were made at a press conference held right in the cemetery, following the discovery of bags containing human bones.

According to the mayor, police seized hundreds of bones for the investigation, while the bodies were allegedly located in the same mass grave as remains from several graves. De Mezzo asked the authorities to establish where the bodies came from, who moved them, and under what conditions they were stored. The information regarding the bags containing bodies had not been officially confirmed at that time.

On September 16, police opened a criminal case for desecration of bodies or graves. The investigation also concerns how the bones were exhumed and stored. The mayor claims that regulations required them to be kept in special niches, not in a mass grave.

The cemetery was administered for approximately 16 years by the company Ecumenic Funerar. The former administrator was evicted by a bailiff on September 2, following a conflict with the City Hall. In August, Mario De Mezzo became a defendant in a case related to the attempted takeover of the cemetery. The mayor criticized the pace of the investigation and asked the County Police Inspectorate and the Prosecutor’s Office to clarify the case.
