Prosecutors in Slatina questioned four people in the case of the bones found in bags in a cemetery

Slatina prosecutors questioned four people in the criminal case opened after human bones were discovered at the Strehareţ Orthodox Cemetery. The remains, belonging to approximately 23 people, were found on September 16, 2026, by a team of workers carrying out work on the cemetery grounds.

The bones were discovered in the soil and stored in white and black raffia bags. Police alerted via the 112 emergency number cordoned off the area and conducted an on-site investigation. The Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Slatina District Court opened a case for the desecration of corpses or graves.

Investigators are checking the origin of the bones and whether legal procedures were followed in the event of previous exhumations. Other people are expected to be identified and questioned.

Prosecutors rejected reports that intact bodies had been found, that the remains dated from the COVID-19 pandemic period, or that the burial date was written on the bags. Slatina Mayor Mario de Mezzo, however, claims that people who died during the COVID-19 period may be among the remains and accuses the former administration and the company managing the cemetery of abuses. The mayor also criticizes the pace of the investigation, calling on the authorities to clarify the case.
