Liviu Cristian Negoiță, the mayor of the city of Cernavodă, has been definitively acquitted by the High Court of Cassation and Justice and released from prison.

The mayor of the city of Cernavodă was definitively acquitted on May 27 by the High Court of Cassation and Justice, according to an announcement from the Rador news agency. During the period he was incarcerated, the leadership of the City Hall was taken over by Cătălin Apostol. Previously, Negoiță was sentenced to 4 years in prison for abuse of office, being accused of illegally approving 33 payment orders from the local budget between April 2017 and August 2019.

These acts led to an illegal payment of 9.3 million lei to a sports club, an amount that the court decided to be confiscated. The judges established that the mayor's actions do not constitute criminal offenses, but possibly administrative violations. Negoiță will resume his position immediately after the decision is pronounced, without the need for a prefect's order.
