The Romanian government has decided to mobilize the Army and allocate 7 million lei from the Reserve Fund to protect the Nuclear Power Plant in Cernavodă, following the historic drop in the Danube's flow, which has reached the lowest levels in the last four decades.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that solutions are being analyzed to maintain a sufficient flow, including dredging works on the Bala branch, to redirect more water towards the plant. Among the proposed measures are the controlled sinking of four barges loaded with stone and the detonation of the Pârjoaia Rock, which obstructs the flow of water.
Authorities warn that if the water level continues to drop, the plant will only be able to operate safely for a few days. Additionally, preparations are underway for deepening the Old Danube riverbed and clearing the cooling basin's supply channel. The hydrological crisis is also affecting other countries in the region, and Romanian authorities are constantly monitoring the situation.
