The Romanian government announced that, through the SAFE program, all state forces, including the Army, Police, Gendarmerie, and secret services, will have the same type of pistol, which will improve their interoperability. The head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery, Mihai Jurca, confirmed that all legal requirements for acquisitions have been met, emphasizing that the armament will be produced entirely in Romania. The Minister of Economy, Irineu Darău, highlighted the importance of reindustrialization in defense through the integration of new technologies.
The SAFE program includes 10 projects for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with a total value of 2.72 billion euros, aimed at protecting personnel, surveillance, countering drones, and cyber protection. It will also ensure equipment compliant with NATO and EU standards. The SAFE projects will also support civil protection, including multiple victim management and decontamination in case of contamination. The parliamentary defense committees have approved the initiation of procurement procedures for these projects.
