The Ministries of Defence of Romania and Poland signed a letter of intent in Bucharest on Wednesday concerning cooperation under the “Security Action for Europe” (SAFE) financial instrument, with the aim of supporting the defense industry and joint procurement projects.
The document was signed by Major General Dr. Eng. Ion-Cornel Pleșa, head of the General Directorate for Armaments within Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, and Brigadier General Romuald Maksymiuk, his counterpart at Poland’s Ministry of Defence.
According to Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, the two ministries agreed to intensify bilateral cooperation, as well as collaboration within NATO and the European Union. An important objective is the acquisition of a strike system using loitering munitions, one of the projects managed by Romania and eligible for funding through the SAFE mechanism.
The ceremony took place in the presence of Secretary of State Sorin Moldovan and Poland’s Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defence, Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, who was on an official visit to Bucharest. The signing of the letter marks the beginning of efforts to deepen cooperation and coordinate defense projects between the two countries.
