The Romanian government has approved a new National Bed Plan, valid between 2026 and 2028, which aims to optimize the number of beds for continuous hospitalization, funded by health insurance houses. The interim Minister of Health, Cseke Attila, emphasized that the plan focuses on developing alternative medical services, such as day hospitalization and outpatient care, to better meet patients' needs.

Currently, the bed occupancy rate is 51% for acute patients and 60% for chronic patients, indicating an inefficient use of resources. The plan provides for a phased reduction of approximately 14,000 beds, without affecting access to medical services. Romania has an average of 728 beds per 100,000 inhabitants, exceeding the European average of 511. This reform aims to increase the quality of medical services and the efficiency of the healthcare system, in the context of a significant increase in day hospitalization, with 6 million patients in 2024, a 15% increase compared to 2023.
