The first case of Chikungunya virus was confirmed in Romania in a man approximately 50 years old. This disease, transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes, is rare in Europe, being more frequently encountered in Africa and South America. Adrian Marinescu, the manager of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases 'Matei Balș', discussed the risks and symptoms of the virus, emphasizing the importance of correct diagnosis, especially for people traveling in risk areas. Adrian Marinescu highlighted three essential aspects: the necessity of vaccination before traveling, the increased risk for individuals with a deficient immune system, and the symptomatic confusion with other viral infections. He also mentioned that the virus is not easily transmitted between humans, but through mosquitoes. The diagnosis of Chikungunya is complex and requires special equipment, and the 'Matei Balș' Institute will also be able to detect other rare viruses, such as the Nipah virus. The diagnosed patient is expected to be discharged, and authorities continue to monitor the situation to prevent the spread of the virus.
