Leonardo Badea, first deputy governor of the National Bank of Romania, analyzed the impact of tensions in the Middle East on global energy markets, emphasizing that they amplify a longer-standing series of crises related to oil and gas. He explained that, similar to the oil shocks of the 1970s, the current disruptions can generate inflation and economic instability, especially in the context of difficulties in exporting liquefied natural gas from key regions such as Qatar.
The BNR official warned that Europe, dependent on gas imports, faces systemic risks and may temporarily have to revert to more polluting sources to ensure its energy security. In this context, he emphasized the need for investments in infrastructure and renewable energy to strengthen Romania's energy independence.
