A trip in the Bucegi Mountains turned into an emergency intervention on July 2, 2026, when a teacher was struck by lightning during a storm while supervising a group of 14 students. The incident occurred on the trail between Omu Peak and Ialomița Cave, and the teacher remained unconscious after the impact. The students managed to reach a nearby sheepfold, where the shepherd alerted the authorities. The mountain rescuers from Dâmbovița intervened quickly, providing first aid and stabilizing the victim before transporting her to the Peștera Mountain Rescue Base.
She was subsequently taken over by the SMURD crews and transported to the hospital, having burns on 30% of her body surface. One student also suffered a trauma to a lower limb. The mountain rescuers emphasized the risks of mountain storms and recommended that tourists avoid dangerous areas in such conditions. They thanked the shepherd for his quick response.
