Swimmer Paul Georgescu clarified on Facebook Tuesday evening that he is not the son of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, after numerous messages of support addressed mistakenly to him appeared online.
The athlete, who specializes in swimming in open and icy waters, explained that the confusion was between him and Pavel Georgescu, Călin Georgescu’s son. Paul Georgescu said he was amused while reading the comments but felt it necessary to clarify the situation.
The swimmer stated that his father is Eugen Georgescu, a coach and an important figure in Romanian water polo. He said he was proud of his father’s contribution to the development of the sport and wished Pavel Georgescu success, emphasizing that each person should be appreciated for their own achievements.
The confusion was also fueled by photographs showing Paul Georgescu with drawings on his arms. The athlete explained that these were not permanent tattoos but the signatures of his students, which he wore as a symbol of their support during his sporting adventures across the world’s oceans.
The case drew attention after social media users posted videos congratulating the swimmer, believing that he was Călin Georgescu’s son.
