Siegfried Mureșan, chief negotiator of the European Parliament for the multiannual budget 2028–2034, presented an interim report before the Budget Committee, proposing a 10% increase in European funds compared to the initial budget of the European Commission. Mureșan emphasizes the importance of adequate funding for both traditional policies, such as agriculture and cohesion, as well as for new European priorities, including strengthening defense and boosting the economy.
He highlighted previous achievements in negotiations with the European Commission, which include an additional 50 billion euros for agriculture and rural development. The interim report will become the first official position of the European Parliament following the budget proposal in July and will be negotiated with political groups and specialized committees for adoption in the first part of next year. Mureșan proposes that negotiations for the multiannual budget be completed by the end of 2026, so that Romania and other member states are ready to access the new funds from January 1, 2028.
