According to Eurostat data, the share of taxes and social contributions in the GDP of the European Union increased to 40.4% in 2024, compared to 39.9% in 2023.

Ireland and Romania are among the countries with the lowest share, with values of 22.4% and, respectively, 28.8%. In contrast, Denmark, France, and Belgium record the highest shares, exceeding 45%.

In Romania, the share increased from 27.5% in 2023 to 28.8% in 2024. Additionally, tax revenues have increased in all member states, except for Finland, with Romania experiencing a 16% increase.

Romania collected only 6% of GDP from income taxes, the lowest level in the EU, and, like Estonia, Slovakia, and Sweden, does not apply capital taxes.
