Before the initiative concerning support for farmers, Parliament adopted legislative amendments for state aid schemes intended for 2026, including the pig farming sector: legal entities established under Law 31/1990 were explicitly included in the category of beneficiaries, and applications are to be submitted within ten working days of the new law’s entry into force, with details regarding the period and procedure to be communicated by APIA after publication in the Official Gazette.
Also in the pig farming sector, the European Commission approved a Romanian state aid scheme worth approximately 59 million lei (around 11 million euros) for pig farmers, in the form of direct grants for additional costs incurred between 1 March and 31 December 2026, with a ceiling of up to 50,000 euros per enterprise, authorized under the temporary METSAF framework.
Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and acting Minister of Agriculture Tánczos Barna had warned that farmers risk not receiving the promised subsidy and aid payments by the end of the year if the Government does not approve a budget rectification, with the ministry needing between 1.2 and 1.5 billion lei to make the payments.
