In the first four months of 2026, Romania recorded a budget deficit of 23.95 billion lei, representing 1.17% of GDP, a significant decrease compared to the deficit of 55.97 billion lei (2.92% of GDP) during the same period of 2025. This budget adjustment, of over 32 billion lei, marks a change in trajectory in the management of public finances. The deficit decreased from 3.24% of GDP in 2024 and 2.92% in 2025, highlighting an important fiscal consolidation. Budget revenues increased by 12%, reaching 223.83 billion lei, supported by collections from VAT and taxes. Total expenditures decreased by 3.2%, without affecting public investments, which remained high, especially due to European funds. The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, emphasized the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline and accelerating the absorption of European funds to support economic development and reduce macroeconomic vulnerabilities.
