Starting from February 25, 2026, Romanians visiting the United Kingdom for tourism or short stays will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). The announcement was made by the Romanian Embassy in the UK. The application for the ETA is done exclusively online, costing £16, and the fastest method is through the official UK ETA app, available on Android and iOS.
Those without a smartphone can apply on the British government website, providing personal data, passport information, a recent photograph, and answering a few simple questions. The authorization is valid for two years, but a new ETA will be required if the passport expires beforehand. Exceptions to this requirement include Romanian citizens with a British or Irish passport, those with settled or pre-settled status, individuals with residence, work, or study visas, and accredited diploma holders. Romanian transport companies must ensure that drivers have an ETA to avoid penalties. This measure is part of post-Brexit UK regulations aimed at improving border control and the security of international travel.
