Romania managed to win three bronze medals at the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) 2026, held in Shenzhen, China, with the participation of 56 teams.
The medals were obtained by Radu Nedea, Robert Bercea, and Iustin Alexandru Gheorghe, along with their colleagues Giorgio Filippo Sforza and Iris Voinea. The Romanian team was prepared by the Romanian Center for Excellence in Economics (RECE), under the coordination of Professor Cristian Gheorghe. Romania has accumulated a total of 21 distinctions in its eight participations at the IEO, including 4 silver medals and 15 bronze.
Participation in the IEO was described by students as a challenging yet honorable experience, highlighting the importance of rigorous preparation. The national selection program involved over 500 students from 23 counties, and the training was supported by partnerships with the private and academic sectors. Prof. Dr. Alexandra Dache, the national coordinator of Romania, emphasized the importance of collaboration between education and the private sector to support students' potential.
