Romania’s women’s handball team defeated Hungary 33-30 on Sunday in Bucharest in the third-place match at the 2026 EHF Euro Cup. The victory earned the Tricolours the bronze medal after their 20-28 semifinal defeat by Denmark.
The match was evenly balanced in the first half. Romania fought back after Hungary opened up a 10-7 lead in the 17th minute, and the two teams went into halftime level at 16-16.
The team coached by Ovidiu Mihăilă took control after the break and built a four-goal lead, 21-17, in the 37th minute. Hungary managed to equalize at 23-23 and 25-25, but Romania handled the closing stages better to win 33-30.
Cristina Laslo was Romania’s top scorer with seven goals, followed by Elena Roșu with six, and Lorena Ostase and Crina Pintea with five each. Goalkeeper Bianca Curmenț made 13 saves. For Hungary, Katrin Klujber scored 11 goals.
The EHF Euro Cup is a competition for teams automatically qualified for the 2026 European Championship, hosted by Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Türkiye. Norway and Denmark will face each other in the tournament final.
