The Minister of Economy, Irineu Darău, stated that Romania will produce 155 mm caliber projectiles, NATO standard, in the coming years, according to promises made to the European Commission at the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
Although he could not provide an exact timeline, he emphasized the increased interest from state companies and investors, including discussions with a firm from the USA to start production.
Romania currently imports these projectiles from the USA and South Korea, considering the lack of a dedicated production line. In 2024, the Romanian state obtained the possibility to borrow 220 million dollars from the USA to produce 155 mm and 120 mm caliber ammunition, but no concrete details have been announced. The 155 mm projectiles are essential for NATO ground artillery, and Romania currently only produces Soviet caliber projectiles, such as 122 mm and 152 mm.
