France, Germany and Italy are leaders in organic farming, and Romania plans to follow this model by creating a dedicated agency. Its role would be to promote organic products and manage sector data. Although 2019 legislation provides for the agency to be set up, progress is slow. Romania has more than 11,000 companies in the organic sector, but organic consumption remains below 5% of total food sales. Compared to the EU average of almost 9%, Romania ranks ninth in Europe in terms of the area dedicated to organic farming.
