Romania has spent almost 7 billion lei on the special pensions of magistrates in the last five years. The Constitutional Court has postponed for the fourth time the decision regarding the reform of magistrates' pensions, requesting a delay until February 11 to study two reports.
The first report, from the High Court of Cassation and Justice, states that service pensions would be lower than those based on contributions, with a decrease of 36% for judges from lower courts and over 51% for those from the High Court. The second report, from the National Pension House, shows that the average service pension in 2025 will be 24,842 lei gross, compared to 2,778 lei gross in the public system. In the last five years, 1,656 magistrates have retired, and in 2025, 283 have requested retirement. A new session of the Court is scheduled for February 11.
