Romania is facing one of the most severe hydrological droughts in recent decades, and the flow of the Danube could drop below the lowest level ever recorded in August.

Currently, the flow of the Danube is 1,550 m³/s, nearly three times lower than the multiannual average. Authorities warn that the next two weeks are decisive and announce measures to maintain the necessary flows, including for the operation of the nuclear power plant in Cernavodă. The drought also affects rivers in Crișana, Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, and Moldova, and in some areas, drying phenomena have already appeared.

Authorities are preparing technical interventions, including the controlled submersion of barges to direct water. There is also a call for the population to use water and electricity responsibly. Despite the difficulties, the accumulation lakes in the country have a filling degree of about 70%, providing a strategic reserve for water supply.
