Alexandru Rogobete, the Minister of Health, explained that, 10 years after the Colectiv tragedy, Romania does not have enough resources to treat patients with severe burns. Currently, the country has only 35 beds for patients with moderate burns, and severe cases are transferred abroad due to a lack of infrastructure.
The construction of three hospitals for major burns began in 2022, but they will not be operational immediately. Rogobete emphasized that, in 2021, the projects were stalled due to bureaucracy and incompetence. At Floreasca Hospital, modernization works will begin in 2024, but the current conditions do not allow for the treatment of patients with severe burns. The minister acknowledged that patients with severe burns die within days if treated in Romanian hospitals, which is why transfers abroad are necessary.
