The Romanian Air Force launched a new Air Policing mission on Monday in the Baltic airspace, as part of Romania's commitment to NATO's collective security. The 'Carpathian Vipers' detachment, consisting of approximately 100 military personnel and six F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft, is deployed in Lithuania at the Siauliai air base and will carry out this mission from April to July.
The purpose of the mission is to protect the integrity of the airspace of the Baltic States, with Romanian aircraft serving the role of providing early warning and intervention in the case of unauthorized aircraft. This represents the fourth deployment of the Romanian Air Force in Lithuania, the first taking place in 2007 with MiG-21 LanceR. Previous missions were conducted in 2023 and 2025, demonstrating Romania's ongoing commitment to NATO security.
