Metrorex is in a critical situation due to huge debts of 217.2 million lei to Alstom, the company responsible for the maintenance of the metro trains. Although there are currently no trains stopped from running, Alstom warns that financial difficulties are affecting maintenance activities, which are essential for the safety of passengers. According to legislation, trains must have up-to-date revisions and valid technical authorization to operate. The current maintenance contract, signed in 2022, is worth approximately 500 million euros and covers the entire fleet of trains. In November 2025, Alstom placed a lien on Metrorex's accounts due to unpaid debts, which increases the risk of a crisis in underground transport in Bucharest.
