Oana Lasconi, the daughter of former USR president Elena Lasconi, generated a wave of online outrage through a post on social media in which she claims that Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, is "a billion times more feminist and moral" than Patriarch Daniel. Her comments have been criticized, considering the situation of women in Iran, where they are often arrested and killed for violating dress codes. Vasile Bănescu, former spokesperson for the Romanian Orthodox Church, reacted by saying that "we all have the inalienable right to make fools of ourselves."
Oana Lasconi continued to assert that "Christianity dehumanizes women," claiming that women in Iran have chosen their fate. This is not the first time Lasconi has sparked controversy; previously, she criticized her mother's views on family and declared herself a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. She has also identified as a Bolshevik and a member of the Romanian Socialist Party.
