Radu Miruță, the dismissed Minister of National Defense, stated that the equipment ordered for the Romanian Army must generate production and industrial capabilities in Romania, in the context of a potential security situation.
During the visit to the production facilities in Mediaș, Miruță highlighted that the SAFE contracts must support the local industry, emphasizing that the equipment is produced in Romania.
“What the Romanian Army orders, what we have added to the orders through SAFE, is produced in Romania. We are not buying off the shelves of other countries, this propaganda that has been going around the SAFE programs is not validated,” said Radu Miruță.
He mentioned the delivery of the first Cobra vehicles manufactured in Mediaș and discussed the contracts with Otokar and Rheinmetall, emphasizing the importance of developing internal production capabilities.
Miruță emphasized that the Ministry of Defense not only wants compliant products but also the guarantee that the factories in Romania can continue production.
“For us at the Ministry of Defense, it is not enough to pay for a product that meets the requirements we have set, but to have the guarantee that those factories have the capacity to withstand and continue production in Romania,” Miruță added.
This change comes after a period in which most equipment was imported, and now there is a desire for large companies to move their production to the country to collaborate with the Romanian Government.
