Before the new interventions in Suceava, ANSVSA announced preparations and measures in the context of Peste des Petits Ruminants and Sheep and Goat Pox, including a warning regarding clandestine transport of sheep, considered a “major biological hazard.” At the same time, procedures were announced for vaccinating sheep and goats in Constanța and Tulcea, an operation coordinated by ANSVSA and launched earlier when doses from EU stocks arrived ahead of schedule, while temporary movement restrictions remained in force.
Authorities in Suceava County have introduced urgent measures after confirming rabies in three cattle from households in the localities of Giurgești and Românești. The sick animals were slaughtered, while cattle that came into contact with them will be isolated and monitored by veterinarians.
The cases were identified in the commune of Vulturești and, respectively, in the commune of Grănicești. After the disease was confirmed, the Suceava Prefecture convened an emergency meeting of the Local Disease Control Center on Thursday. The plan proposed by the Directorate for Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety was approved, aimed at limiting the spread of the virus and protecting the population.
The outbreaks were officially declared, and the authorities launched epidemiological investigations to determine the source of the infection and identify animals that may have come into contact with the sick cattle. Emergency rabies vaccinations will be carried out in the protection zones.
The plan also includes intensifying efforts to manage the fox population and stray dogs, which may be vectors of the disease. Owners will be informed about registering and vaccinating their animals, as well as reporting changes in behavior.
Rabies, also known as hydrophobia, is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, via bites, scratches or contact with wounds and mucous membranes. Once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. Residents are advised to avoid animals displaying unusual behavior and to immediately notify a veterinarian or the Suceava Directorate for Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety.
