Acting Minister of Internal Affairs Cătălin Predoiu announced Tuesday evening that public order had been restored after violence broke out at the farmers’ protest in Victory Square, Bucharest. The official said that the square and the surrounding boulevards had been reopened to traffic following the intervention by structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Predoiu thanked the gendarmes, police officers and other structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the way they acted, describing it as calm, restrained and professional. The statement was made after incidents in which the authorized protest escalated, prompting law enforcement to intervene to restore the situation.
The deputy prime minister made a fresh appeal for calm and called on participants to respect the peaceful nature of legally authorized demonstrations. He thanked the citizens who protested without violence and said that those who had broken the law had been or would be subject to legal proceedings.
Cătălin Predoiu stressed that violence, assaults on law enforcement officers and turning a protest into a street confrontation cannot be accepted. The authorities’ action is continuing as the facts are analyzed and the necessary legal measures are ordered.
