A cargo ship, Phoenix Jupiter, loaded with 1,133 tons of chemical cargo, sank near the Port of Zimnicea, triggering a pollution alert. Authorities in Teleorman observed an increase in ammonia levels in the Danube after the incident. Representatives of the Water Management System and the National Environmental Guard went to the scene to assess the situation.
Initial analyses did not show exceedances of the permitted limits, but subsequent samples indicated an increase in ammonia. The prefect of the county convened a technical support group to monitor water quality and inform the population about risks. The Public Health Directorate has been notified, and authorities are collaborating to minimize the impact of the incident. In Teleorman County, there are no localities that depend on the water from the Danube downstream of the incident.
