Almost 100 employees of the Plopeni Mechanical Plant staged a spontaneous protest on Monday after learning that they are targeted for layoffs. Workers from the pyrotechnics department, which represents almost a third of the factory's staff, stopped working and demanded that any potential layoffs should affect office employees, not those in production. The protesters claim that the plant is going through a difficult period, amid declining orders and a lack of management, after the general director and the commercial director were placed under house arrest in a corruption case handled by the DNA. Employees also complain about low wages in relation to the risks of the job, stating that a pyrotechnics worker earns approximately 5,000 lei, including the danger bonus.
