The authorities in Oradea have started testing an automated system that uses artificial intelligence to identify and sanction drivers who park illegally on sidewalks and bike lanes. The pilot project, conducted in heavily trafficked areas, aims to reduce the obstruction of spaces designated for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as to supplement the personnel shortage in the Local Police. Currently, the system only issues warnings, but starting next month, drivers risk fines of up to 2,500 lei.
The video cameras connected to the AI platform identify vehicles, license plate numbers, and the duration of parking, and the penalties are processed automatically. Representatives of the City Hall emphasize that the goal is not to increase revenue from fines, but to ensure order and streamline the activities of the Local Police. The system automatically excludes emergency vehicles and those with special permits from sanctions.
