On Friday, the government decided to recall Oleg Ungureanu from his position as consul general and head of Romania’s Consulate General in Lyon, France. The decision was adopted at a government meeting, and Ungureanu is expected to return to the country to take over as head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery.
According to the government’s decision, Oleg Ungureanu is being recalled from the post to which he was appointed in 2023. Government sources cited in the reports state that he is expected to be appointed head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery, a position with ministerial rank.
However, the public information contains an ambiguity regarding the name of the future head of the Chancellery: one passage mentions Oleg Neculăescu, while the recall from Lyon concerns Oleg Ungureanu. The appointment is to be officially confirmed.
Oleg Ungureanu would be the second person from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to join the government team. On Wednesday, Mihaela-Ilincuța Ștefan-Simion was appointed chief of staff to Prime Minister Luca Niculescu. The consul general in Lyon had held the position since 2023.
