Nine people, including seven police officers, were detained for 24 hours on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in a corruption case being investigated by prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Sibiu Tribunal. The investigation concerns more than 170 offences related to obtaining driving licences, registration certificates and identity cards.
Prosecutors conducted 14 home searches in Sibiu County as part of “Jupiter” Operation, carried out nationwide under the coordination of the General Prosecutor’s Office. On Thursday, November 5, the imposition of further preventive measures is due to be considered.
According to investigators, between June 2025 and October 2026, a 57-year-old man allegedly requested and, in some cases, received between 100 lei and €1,500, claiming that he could intervene with police officers to help people pass the practical driving test or obtain certain documents more quickly.
The same man allegedly repeatedly brokered sums ranging from €50 to €2,000, intended for the seven police officers working in Sibiu’s driving licence and vehicle registration departments and its population records structures. In some cases, he was allegedly assisted by a 46-year-old man.
The case includes accusations of influence peddling and buying influence, accepting and giving bribes, complicity in corruption and illegal lending. The 57-year-old man is also being investigated for repeatedly granting interest-bearing loans without authorisation. Officers from the General Anticorruption Directorate, the Alba Iulia Special Operations Brigade and the Sibiu County Police Inspectorate took part in the operation, with the support of the Gendarmerie.
