Nicușor Dan has commemorated the victims of the Mineriade of June 13-15, 1990, calling it a "brutal repression" that delayed Romania's progress towards democracy. Thirty-five years after the events, he underlined the importance of the protests in University Square and criticized the violent actions of the miners called in by Ion Iliescu to repress anti-communist demonstrations. Ion Iliescu, who is on trial for crimes against humanity, is part of a case involving other political leaders of the period.
