President Nicuşor Dan and Prime Minister Luca Niculescu expressed messages of solidarity and condolences on Wednesday following the rail accident in the Spanish province of Toledo, south of Madrid, in which at least 30 people died and several others were injured.

The head of state said he was deeply saddened by the tragedy and that Romania stands in solidarity with Spain and the Spanish people. Nicuşor Dan extended his condolences to the victims’ families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Prime Minister Luca Niculescu said that the Romanian Government is in constant contact with the Spanish authorities through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Romanian Embassy in Madrid and Romania’s consulates are prepared to provide consular assistance to Romanian citizens who may be affected.

The accident occurred after two trains collided and comes nine months after another rail incident on the same line that left 46 people dead. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez cancelled his schedule for the rest of the day, while the People’s Party suspended its campaign events.

Context: the Spanish authorities continued the response, while Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested checks regarding Romanian citizens

Shortly before the official messages, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had no information regarding Romanian citizens among the victims of the railway accident that occurred on Wednesday morning in the province of Toledo. Two high-speed trains, operated by Renfe and Iryo, collided shortly after 09:00, and as a result of the impact, two carriages of the Iryo train derailed; search, rescue, and first-aid operations were still underway.

The Romanian Consulate requested official information from the Spanish authorities about the identity and citizenship of the deceased and injured persons, and up to that point the diplomatic mission had not received any requests for consular assistance.
