Mircea Geoană appreciated the presence of President Nicușor Dan at the Peace Council, emphasizing the importance of clear gestures on the external front at the beginning of the mandate. He stated that reconfirming the privileged relationship with the United States is essential for Romania's security, which depends on American support. Geoană mentioned that Romania's participation in the Peace Council initiated by Donald Trump must be accompanied by a clear strategy in the Middle East.
"It is mandatory for the President of Romania to reconfirm at the beginning of a new mandate the privileged relationship with America; it is part of the job description. There is no security for Romania without a contribution from the Americans. You go to the peace council that will probably last at least three years – until January 20, 2029, we will see whether it remains or not. But, in fact, what we have seen in the country's defense strategy, presented by the president and approved by parliament.
We must say with subject and predicate not only in Washington but also in Europe, at home, that we need trade and investments from multiple directions to be able to strengthen the economy, to be able to play the economic and strategic game. We need to go to the Americans to make a business case.
The visit to Washington will be very good, the relationship with Europeans will be more participatory, and about the discussion on the future of Ukraine and Moldova, we will re-enter the game. At this moment, the feeling is that Romania, due to reasons attributable to our less clear game, but also attributable to the fact that the geographical interest has shifted – the Black Sea is currently in an eclipse even within the Alliance, why? Because Greenland has emerged, a problem that is still not resolved, although Mark Rutte has done an exceptional job to calm things down a bit, things are not over." said Mircea Geoană on Antena 3 CNN.
