The general mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, has announced an investment plan to limit flooding in Bucharest, based on the construction of two large retention basins and the modernization of the stormwater management infrastructure. The mayor claims that the project already has funding solutions, including from European funds and loans from development banks.

Following the storms that caused flooding in Bucharest, general mayor Ciprian Ciucu stated that the current sewer system can no longer cope with extreme weather phenomena for which it was not designed. The proposed solution consists of constructing two large retention basins upstream, which will take in the excess water and gradually discharge it into the Dâmbovița River, thus reducing the risk of flooding and ensuring reserves for dry periods.

According to the mayor, the City Hall and Apa Nova have already developed an investment plan and are analyzing funding through European funds, international banks, and possibly a small increase in the water tariff.

In parallel, Apa Nova is conducting feasibility studies and works for new retention basins in several areas of the city, and the municipality intends to introduce specific solutions of the "sponge city" concept into public projects to increase water absorption capacity.
