Iulia Motoc, a judge at the International Criminal Court, recently commented on femicide, emphasizing that while sanctions are a step forward, they are not sufficient to combat this phenomenon. Motoc states that femicide is an extreme consequence of gender inequalities and patriarchal social structures, highlighting that women are often devalued in a society that assigns them a lower value than men. She referred to a recent case in Teleorman, where a woman was killed by her husband in front of their son, emphasizing that traditional gender norms contribute to violence.
Motoc discussed the sense of ownership that men may feel over women, which can lead to violence when women challenge this control. Following the incident, authorities began national checks regarding the management of domestic violence cases, and the attorney general ordered a review of how previous complaints from the victim were handled.
