Ion Iliescu died on August 5, 2025, at the age of 95, due to ill health. Gigi Becali, the FCSB FCSB financier, said that although he did not know him personally, he considered Iliescu to have been "the best behaved" president of Romania compared to his predecessors. Becali admitted that Iliescu was wrong about the mineriades, but emphasized that he was never a prosecutor or judge, only president.
