According to official data, nearly 1.3 million people in the European Union are homeless, a figure that exceeds the population of Brussels. In the last 15 years, housing prices have increased by 60%, and rents by almost 30%, which has generated a state of anxiety for many Europeans. Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, has acknowledged this problem and announced a 'plan for affordable housing' that will be presented soon. Although housing is not a direct competence of the EU, the pressure for intervention has increased, especially from the left. The Commission intends to develop legislation to limit short-term rentals, such as those through Airbnb, in tourist areas, to combat rising rents and protect locals.
