Border police discovered four monkeys hidden in a car at the Moravița Customs.

Border police at the Moravița Border Crossing discovered on July 17, 2026, at 06:40 four monkeys hidden in the trunk of a car registered in Ukraine.

The 47-year-old woman driving the vehicle claimed that the animals were inherited from her recently deceased mother, but she could not present the necessary legal documents for their origin and transport. Authorities were informed that the monkeys are protected species under the CITES Convention, and their introduction into the European Union is only permitted with the appropriate documentation.

Following the incident, investigations were initiated to establish the circumstances and necessary legal measures. The monkeys were handed over to the Veterinary Sanitary Directorate and the Food Safety Authority in Timiș.
