MEP AUR-ECR Georgiana Teodorescu believes that the directive on the return of illegal migrants strengthens the tools of member states and accelerates expulsions. Georgiana Teodorescu welcomes the new EU rules for the return of illegal migrantsDisplay image information

MEP Georgiana Teodorescu states that the new rules regarding the return of illegal migrants provide national authorities with extensive security tools and the possibility of using return centers outside the European Union. MEP Georgiana Teodorescu, a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, welcomed the European Parliament's vote on the directive that establishes a common system for the return of nationals of third countries found in illegal residence. In her opinion, the new provisions expand the competencies of member states and allow for the acceleration of expulsion procedures.

In short Georgiana Teodorescu welcomes the adoption of the directive on the return of illegal migrants. The MEP believes that the legislative text expands the security tools of member states. The directive allows detention for over 24 months and unlimited entry bans in certain cases. Additional investigative tools are introduced in return procedures. The possibility of establishing return centers in countries outside the EU is provided.

In her statement, the MEP characterized the vote in the European Parliament as an important step in strengthening the Union's migration policies. "It is a victory for the European right, of which the ECR Group is a part. All those who arrive illegally in Europe must be sent back to their countries of origin as quickly as possible. Our absolute priority must be the European citizen who must feel safe at home," stated Georgiana Teodorescu.

She emphasized that the directive provides national authorities with extensive tools for managing illegal migration and removes procedural barriers that can delay expulsions. According to the statement, the legislative text expands the scope of situations that can be considered security risks and introduces derogations that allow for the application of additional measures.

Among these measures are the possibility of imposing unlimited entry bans and extending the detention period beyond 24 months, as well as using stronger investigative tools in return procedures, including searches and seizures of relevant materials.

The MEP also highlighted the flexibility granted to member states to establish return centers in countries outside the European Union, which she described as "an innovative tool" in managing illegal migration. "We, both at the level of the ECR Group and back home in Romania, have consistently advocated for the introduction of such innovative approaches, such as return centers in third countries," she stated.

Furthermore, Georgiana Teodorescu linked the adoption of the directive to other legislative initiatives regarding migration, including the establishment of a list of safe countries of origin and the development of the concept of a safe third country. "A credible migration policy can only go in one direction: those who do not have the legal right to remain in the European Union must be expelled as quickly as possible, while protection must be granted to those who truly need it," she added.

Separately, the MEP participated in the launch of a study on migration and developments in certain European urban areas, organized by the ECR Group and the New Direction Foundation. The study analyzes 17 areas in seven member states and addresses themes such as crime and integration, in the context of migration.

The directive on the return of illegal migrants is part of broader reforms of the European Union in the field of migration and asylum, aimed at strengthening the capacity of member states to manage migratory flows and differentiate between those eligible for protection and those who do not meet the legal conditions for residence.

The MEP's statement reflects the position of a part of the European political spectrum that supports strengthening return measures and expanding migration control tools, including through external solutions such as return centers in third countries.
