Statistics regarding gender-based violence in Romania are alarming, with an average of one woman killed per week and 14 cases of domestic violence reported per hour. In 2025, 55 women were victims of femicide. On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection (DGASPC) launched an intervention guide, aimed not only at women but also at children and the elderly. The guide offers advice for victims and witnesses, emphasizing the importance of calling authorities in case of danger.
Alexandra Dobre, deputy director at DGASPC, announced the opening of two protected housing facilities for victims, which will provide psychological and legal support. It was also emphasized that relatives and friends should intervene and report abuses. Globally, violence against women is on the rise, with UN estimates showing that a woman is killed every 10 minutes. In Romania, calls to emergency numbers are essential to help victims and stop this scourge.
