The Cluj County Council has launched a free sterilization project for animals, aimed at combating the abandonment of dogs. With a budget of 500,000 lei, the program will allow the sterilization of over a thousand animals, giving owners the opportunity to avoid costs. Interested parties must submit an online application, and will subsequently receive a voucher to present at partner veterinary clinics.

The interventions are carried out by professionals, and some clinics also offer transportation services for hard-to-move animals. Specialists emphasize the importance of sterilization, warning that a pair of unsterilized dogs can generate up to 67,000 dogs in six years, most of which end up abandoned. Although sterilization is mandatory by law, fines for non-compliance are rarely enforced, and many owners choose to ignore the regulations.
