Two former finance ministers, Adrian Câciu and Florin Cîțu, are sounding the alarm regarding the social crisis in Romania, highlighting recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) which shows a decline in the volume of retail sales for the sixth consecutive month. In January 2026, the volume decreased by 9.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, indicating a collapse in consumer spending. Cîțu warns that the discrepancies between economic reality and official estimates reflect propaganda, not economic analysis. At the same time, Câciu highlights the social impact of the crisis and criticizes the budget proposal of Minister Bolojan, considering that it does not address the current challenges. Both former ministers emphasize the seriousness of the economic and social situation in Romania.
