The Bucharest Military Tribunal has scheduled the final hearings in the 10 August case, in which former leaders of the Gendarmerie are being judged for abuse of office related to the forceful intervention against protesters in Victory Square in August 2018.
Judge Nicolae George Octavian has established that on Wednesday the victims' lawyers will present their pleas, and on Thursday the defendants' lawyers. The facts will be time-barred in October, which imposes a short deadline for the decision to be pronounced. At the last hearings, two of the defendants did not appear, and Colonel Laurențiu Cazan was heard last week. In this case, 312 individuals have constituted civil parties. Prosecutors argue that the gendarmes' intervention was illegal and unjustified, using equipment that can be considered inhumane treatment. The accusations also target other officers and non-commissioned officers from the Capital's Gendarmerie, involved in dispersing the protesters.
