The former Minister of Defense, Mihai Fifor, emphasized on Facebook the necessity of activating Article 4 of the NATO treaty, considering the security threats that Romania is facing.

He mentioned that countries like Poland and Estonia have resorted to this mechanism in similar situations and criticized the Romanian authorities for their lack of action in requesting urgent consultations. Fifor referred to the statements of the Minister of Economy and Defense, Radu Miruță, who acknowledged that Romania is lagging in terms of anti-drone capabilities and called for additional support measures from NATO.

He emphasized that Article 4 does not involve military escalation, but is a political tool through which an allied state can request consultations when it feels threatened.

Fifor reminded that Romania has already invoked this article in February 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and called on the authorities to urgently convene consultations within the North Atlantic Council to protect national security.
